EQUISETUM ARVENSE (horse tail) contains, in its aerial part, silicic acid and silicates (about 15%), flavonoids, saponosides (equisetonine), alkaloids (nicotine). The therapeutic efficacy of this plant is essentially due to its silica content, a large part of which is soluble and can be absorbed. Silica helps the regeneration of connective tissue, improving its elasticity. The seeds of AVENA SATIVA (Oats) contain saponins, alkaloids, trigonelline, silicic acid, starch, proteins, B vitamins and mineral salts, essentially calcium. It is used in all cases of organic wasting, as a stimulant of the neurovascular system and in diseases affecting the digestive system. CANINE ROSE (Rose of spot) contains vitamin C, K, P,_{B 1}, B₁₂ and A; of carotenoids, pectins and tannins and thanks to all these active ingredients has a strong vasoprotective action (strengthened with the synergism of bioflavonoids), anti-inflammatory and diuretic. The plant is known above all for its vitamin C content (from 0.3% to 1.7%), which makes it an excellent adjuvant in deficiencies. The bark of CINCHONA CALISAYA (China) contains alkaloids (quinine, quinidine, etc.), bitter triterpenic glucosides, tannins and quinic acid. Quinidine has a moderating action on cardiac activity, decreases the excitability of the heart and regulates its rhythm. The cinchona is also used as a tonic, eupeptic, anti-fermentative, stimulant and neurotonic capable of causing an increase in appetite and gastric and salivary secretion, intestinal gastric motility and liver function. The INDIAN GINSENG or WITHANIA (Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal.) is known in the Ayurvedic medical tradition as Ashwagandha. The plant grows spontaneously in India, but also in Italy (Sicily and Sardinia). The etymology of the word “ashwagandha” derives from the Sanskrit word “ashva”, which means horse, and from “gandha”, i.e. smell, a name given to it by the fact that its root has a strong odor reminiscent of that of the horse. It contains steroidal lactones (Withanolides), alkaloids (Withanine), Withaferin A, polysaccharides, aminoscides, etc. It has been known and used since ancient times by Ayurvedic medicine, such as adaptogen, aphrodisiac, liver tonic and for its immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. It is to the withania alkaloid that the tonic and adaptogenic properties are due, for this reason it is able to increase the body’s resistance to external stimuli (stress, tiredness, etc.). Some studies have confirmed the anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties of the plant and this thanks to the steroids it contains. The plant, as confirmed in a study, is useful in people stressed by the commitments of daily life and to whom it can give an invigorating effect and help for concentration, to maintain attention and for memory. ELEUTEROCOCCUS SENTICOSUS (Eleutherococcus) contains eleutherosides (0.6-0.9%), coumarins, sugars, polysaccharides, triterpene saponins. The plant has a global tonic effect on the whole organism, particularly on the adrenal glands, allowing them to resist temperature changes, infections and radiation. Studies conducted in Russia have demonstrated the fortifying and stress-inhibiting properties of eleutherococcus. The plant is adaptogenic, as it is able to exert a specific action on physiological processes with the result of increasing physical resistance against environmental stress and general efficiency in situations of extraordinary load, and preventing the onset of diseases. The seeds of PIMPINELLA ANISUM (Anice) contain essential oil (consisting of 70-90% of anethole, with methylcavicol and other terpenes), furanocoumarins, flavonoids, fatty acids, sterols and proteins. In addition to facilitating digestion, reducing flatulence and gastric dilation, the aniseed fruits stimulate the milk flow, give the mother’s milk a pleasant taste and exert a sedative-antispasmodic action also on the infant.
