NOTES: The quintessence of STAR ANISE (Illicium verum) is obtained from the seeds of the plant according to the canonical Spagyric method. Alcohol, contained in the quintessence, is the alcohol obtained from the same plant from which the sulfur principle (purified essential oil) and the fixed salt was obtained, this procedure gives more energy to the Quintessence. The yield in essential oil is excellent and reaches about 5-9%. The active ingredients contained in the oil are: anethole, methylcavicolo, pinene, limonene. Popular use suggests star anise as a digestive, carminative, antispasmodic, galactagogue, in flatulence and intestinal fermentation, in swelling and intestinal spasms after meals especially if of nervous origin. Balsamic: fluidifying catarrhal secretions of the respiratory system. Perfumes the breath. “Il Sole 24 ore” of November 3, 2005 reports the news that star anise is selling like hot cakes in the Beijing markets, because “it contains the main active ingredient of Tamiflu, the antiviral that has proved quite effective in treating people affected by avian influenza“. The newspaper goes on to warn, however, that “there is no evidence that the infusion can be effective in curing the disease”, as the infusion is prepared with the star anise fruit which is woody and which, with difficulty, will be able to release all the active ingredients by simple infusion in boiling water, but 4 or 5 drops of essential oil, to be taken daily, could act as a preventive.
